Lantern Of Tracking 5e
The Lantern of Tracking is a magical wondrous item from the Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount sourcebook. It is a specialized tool designed for hunters and trackers.
Description and Properties
This lantern resembles a standard bullseye lantern. It has a curved metal hood that focuses its light into a narrow beam. While not lit, it appears as a normal, if well-crafted, lantern. Its magic activates only when a user places a piece of the quarry they wish to track inside its designated fuel chamber. Instead of oil, it burns this physical sample as fuel.
Once activated, the lantern’s flame turns a ghostly blue-white. It then projects its beam of light in the exact direction of the creature that the sample came from. The beam points unerringly, even if the creature is on a different plane of existence. The light continues to burn for 5 hours or until extinguished normally.
How to Use the Lantern of Tracking
Using the lantern requires a specific process:
- Obtain a Sample: You must first acquire a physical piece of the creature you want to track. This could be a lock of hair, a drop of blood, a scale, a claw, or a similar part.
- Place the Sample: You place this sample into the lantern’s fuel chamber.
- Light the Lantern: When you light the wick, the sample begins to burn as fuel.
- Follow the Beam: The lantern now projects its narrow beam of light, pointing directly toward the subject of your hunt. The beam will adjust as you move, always indicating the most direct path.
